Dungeons and Dragons

We are in Mallorca today, an island off the east coast of Spain. If there is a cave tour, we usually take it. This was no exception.

We went to Port Cristo to the Caves of Drach. Drach meaning dragon. We were told that this could be a dangerous tour because the cave is actually a dragons lair, but being ever adventurous, we forged ahead.

I saw more windmills today then all the windmills I have ever seen added together. It seemed like each farm and house had a windmill to pump water and other had mills to grind grains. It was not uncommon to see 4 or 5 water pumping mills in any direction you looked. Unfortunately, the windmills are in disrepair.

Windmills of Mallorca

This is one of the most interesting caves we've been through. There were beautiful views along the way, and as we travelled lower into the caves we found ourselves at the side of a huge underground lake approx 100 feet wide by 600 feet long according to the literature. There was bench seating at the side of the lake, kind of like baseball bleachers, so everyone took a seat to see what happened next. Before long what minimal lighting there was dimmed and you saw three large illuminated row boats coming around the corner in the distance. The lead boat carried a trio of musicians. A small organ, a violin and cello. They performed classical pieces for about 15 minutes then disappeared to the far end of the lake. Very nice. We then climbed aboard the row boats for a ride down the lake to the cave exit.

As is turns out, this was a good news / bad new story. The bad news was that no pictures were allowed inside the caves. The good news was that they were selling pictures at a booth when you left the cave. What luck!

We then stopped by a beach town, and then at a pearl factory before returning to the ship.

Phase One, the land and sea phase of our assault on Juno Beach is quickly coming to an end. Tomorrow we will be in Marseille where we will disembark leaving the Carnival Magic behind to start phase two, the land assault! Our minds need to be clear tomorrow to carry out this mission. It will take all our skills and efforts to make Paris by nightfall.

But I think the Captain is onto us.

We had a letter in our state room inviting us to come to the theatre for a party the Captain was throwing. He fed us food and free booze in an effort to immobilize us, and it damn near worked! But we will forge ahead!

Once we arrive in Paris I should have all the free WiFi I can use which will be a nice change because the WiFi on the ship is slow and expensive.

See you in Paris!

  1. That cave looks amazing--and to see musicians floating along out of nowhere--priceless. Sounds like the Magic portion of your holidays was pure "magic"!
